Dobermann Working Lines in Australia

  Fritz and Olga
  Fritz and Olga

The first police dogs in Australia were two Dobermans, “Fritz” and “Olga”. They were part of an experimental trail by the Queensland Police in 1912. The trail was discontinued in 1917 for not meeting expectations.

Roff
“Roff” alias “Digger”

In May, 1918, a medium-sized, rather rough coated, black and tan dog wandered into a postion occupied by members of the Australian 18th Battalion near Villers-Bretonneux. A metal capsule attached to his collar contained a message from a German platoon commander complaining that his men had been without food for 48 hours and were tired. Upon this message the commanding officer had written a reply which, translated reads: "Webber (apparently a brother officer) has been longer than you and he does not complain. We will send you food tonight. Give “Roff” any further messages. He also does not complain."

Roff” quickly made friends with his Australian captors, who re-named him “Digger”. It was decided to send “Digger” to Australia, but he unfortunately died while in quarantine at Southampton.

The dog's body was stuffed and stands today in the War Museum in Australia's capital city, Canberra. His ears are cropped and his well set tail is docked. He stands about 24" high, and is rather long in back. He has a proud carriage, and a dark almond shaped eye, and resembles very much the earlier Dobermanns pictured in Herr Philipp Gruenig's book. Australian breeders who have seen him in the War Museum have no doubt that he was a Dobermann. Had he survived, he would have been Australia's first Dobermann, but unfortunately we had to wait a further 34 years until 1952 before the first Dobermanns arrived in Australia.
